Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The original 128gb m.2 SSD failed. I am attempting to install a new crucial 256gb m.2 ssd. After initializing the new drive on another computer, I have installed the new SSD into the laptop. The laptop start to boot then there is a SMART message stating that the hard drive has failed. There is an orange light on the new SSD that is glowing. I can pull the new SSD drive out of the m.2 slot, plug it into a USB adapter restart the computer, boot it from a USB thumb drive and the laptop will recognize it. But windows won't allow Windows to be installed on a USB device. I'm guessing that the new drive needs to be formated in a specific manner so that the EFI will recognize it when the laptop is beginning to boot.

When you go to install Windows from media, it should see a blank drive (HDD or SSD) and offer to format it for you -- so you do not need to Initialize it using another PC, and that can cause problems when you do.

I would reconnect the SSD to the PC you used to Initialize it and remove all partitions from the SSD.

Then, reconnect it to your PC and boot from Windows media.  It should then see the SSD and offer to format it.
