I have put in a SSD for the C Drive and moved the original hdd to the CD rom. Now I want to remove the HDD (d-drive) out of the Laptop but windows is  not runnig now. I need the recovery windows to run without the D dive.

Help is appreciated.

Hi @WernerB007

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

Got it—thanks for explaining your setup. Before we dive into recovery steps, I want to make sure we fully understand the situation so we can isolate the cause clearly. A few details will help:

  • What is the exact model of your laptop?
  • Which version of Windows was originally installed (Windows 10, Windows 11, etc.)?
  • Did the recovery environment or recovery partition originally reside on the HDD (D‑drive), or do you have recovery media such as a USB/DVD?
  • When you installed the SSD, did you clone the old HDD to it, or was it a fresh install attempt?
  • Right now, when you power on the laptop without the HDD, what error or message do you see on screen?
  • Do you still have access to the recovery partition on the HDD, or has it been removed/altered?

Once we know these details, we’ll be able to determine whether you need to create recovery media, reinstall Windows fresh, or migrate the recovery partition to the SSD.

Would you share these specifics so we can pinpoint the best path forward?

Regards,

Hawks_Eye
