elitebook 8460p
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Experiencing problems with the installation of Windows 7 64-bit on an Elitebook 8460p.  After formatting the Elitebook’s hard drive I inserted a Windows DVD installation disc and pressed the Power button followed by the F9 key, and the Boot Device Options menu appeared on the screen.     To start the Windows Installation routine I clicked on the option for Notebook Upgrade Bay.  Instead of accessing the DVD it tried to load from the hard drive     The hard drive is empty so nothing was loaded.

I decided to restore a backup image file made of the Elitebook’s System partition. I connected the USB HD where the backup file is stored to the Elitebook;  inserted a bootable USB FD that loads the backup and restore software. Then I pressed the Power button followed by the F9 key and the Boot Device Options menu appeared on the screen.     I clicked on the option for the FD and Macrium loaded.  When I looked for the USB HD where backup file resides the hard drive was not shown    I found another Elitebook and plugged-in the USB FD and HD; booted and Macrium Reflect loaded from the FD, and the HD was detected so I could have completed the restore.

Next I ran System Diagnostics .  The Elitebook passed all the tests.  How can it be that a system that will not boot from a bootable DVD, and does not detect a USB HD connected to it can pass System Diagnostic tests.  What do I need to do in order to install Win7 64-bit on a Elitebook that passes all th diagnostic tests?

Hi @kcav

Welcome back and thank you for reaching to the HP forum again 🙂

Based on your description, the hardware it OK and the problem is with the bootable media:

1- it is either not bootable (a.k.a. this DVD is not correctly written)

2- there is a general problem with the DVD device from the laptop itself

3- the particular DVD disc itself is not a favourite of this HP model

Re. (1) - Try booting from the Windows installation media (from this particular DVD disc) from another HP computer of yours and let me know if it boots, you just need to boot it once (F9) and let me know if it loads the Windows installation process itself. Don't install Windows, just try to boot from the DVD

Re. (2) - You can try with another DVD if you have , or I gan guide you how to create a different type of DVD to test

Re. (3) - WIthout any technical explanation, I have noticed that some brands or types of DVD discs may not load on all kind of PCs - I can't provide you a reasonable explanation why, just a fact I have noticed, so if it turns out of be (3), then just use a USB drive or another DVD disc

So, to sum it up and to start from somewhere...

- Try to boot this particular Windows installation DVD discs from another PC and let me know if it works. Is it the very same Win 7 DVD you used about a month ago >here<

-  Do you have a free (empty) USB pen drive to use where you can create Windows installation there ?

You can try instructions from page 2  >here<   and prepare Windows 7 installation media on USB pendrive with Rufus.

Let me know how it goes.

Inserted the same DVD in a different Elitebook, pressed F9 and the Boot Menu. appeared   There were three options on the menu: internal hard drive, DVD drive, and network.  I selected DVD and pressed enter, apparently the DVD is nolonger bootable because the system started from the internal hard drive. :mansurprised:  have an empty USB FD and key for Win 7 Pro 64-bit; would like to make a bootable USB that loads Windows AIK and then Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

You can try to prepare the USB drive based on the instructions from your previous thread
