The hard drive has gone belly up in this laptop.
If I replace it and install Windows will it properly activate the license?
Is there a special version of Windows that I have to get from HP or can i just install the regular one from Microsoft?

Hi:
If your notebook was made in the last 3 - 4 years, you should be able to use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will reinstall W10, the drivers and the software that originally came with your notebook.

Since the W10 product key is in the BIOS, you do not need to know it or enter it to reinstall W10.
You can also clean install W10 by making bootable installation media using the media creation tool from the link below.

After W10 has completed installing, you can install the drivers and available software from your notebook's support page.
