Device: HP Omen Max 16 16z-ak000
For some reason the internal keyboard does not work when booted into windows. It works 100% fine in BIOS but will not detect any key presses. Lights work as they were configured but can no longer be changed either in Light Studio or basic. Light bar still works 100% and is configurable. Touchpad works 100%.
I already tried a full clean windows install and it works for a bit, until I install the gaming hub and it starts to not work.
In device manager a "USB Composite Device"
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.
The DFU Firmware update gives error "the device is uninstalled"
Also Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 does not work, but everything else does.
- Serial Number for my laptop also does not register with my account.
Already tried:
Uninstall and reinstall all HP software. Driver Updates. Win updates. BIOS update. Uninstall device in Device Manager.
Keyboard works in bootable USB.

Hi @SprinkSponk,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for the detailed info. This issue with your HP Omen Max 16 (16z-ak000) keyboard not working in Windows but functioning in BIOS is a problem, especially after installing Omen Gaming Hub. Here's a breakdown of what’s happening and how to fix it:
Root Cause
- The internal keyboard is likely tied to a USB Composite Device that fails to initialize due to a Code 10 error:
“Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.” - This often happens after installing Omen Gaming Hub, which may conflict with the keyboard firmware or driver stack.
- The error also prevents Light Studio from controlling keyboard lighting, though the light bar remains functional.
Recommended Fixes
1. Uninstall Omen Gaming Hub
- Go to Settings → Apps → Installed Apps.
- Uninstall Omen Gaming Hub and Light Studio.
- Restart your PC and check if the keyboard starts working again.
2. Disable Fast Startup
- Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Choose what the power buttons do.
- Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable”.
- Uncheck “Turn on fast startup” → Save changes → Restart.
3. Reinstall USB Composite Device
- Open Device Manager → Find the USB Composite Device with the error.
- Right-click → Uninstall device → Restart.
- If it doesn’t reinstall automatically, run Windows Update or use HP Support Assistant.
4. Check for Firmware Conflicts
- The DFU Firmware Update error (“device is uninstalled”) suggests the keyboard firmware interface is broken.
- Try reinstalling the HP Firmware Pack for your model from the HP Drivers page.
5. Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool
- If the issue persists even after a clean install, use the HP Cloud Recovery Tool to restore the factory image, which includes validated firmware and drivers.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
