I am having a weird problem, and I've been having it for a while, but I am getting overly frustrated with it. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.
Problem: After some time (not sure exactly), but definitely always happens after waking up from hibernation, my internal SD reader locks my SD card. Meaning the card becomes read only.
* I can eject the card, put it into a USB reader, and it works (read and write) fine; then put it back into the internal reader, and it's read-only.
* I can power-down-reboot the computer (never removing the SD card), and it will work fine. (Until it stops again)
Can someone give me some ideas how to figure out what's locking my internal reader and making all my files read-only. It never seems to lock my external SD's, only the internal SD-reader. I get an error message "remove the write-protection or use another disk". Obviously it's nothing to do with the SD card, as if I reboot (and never remove the SD card, it works fine), so how can I figure out how to what is causing the "drive" to be locked?
Any tips would be appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community! I'd like to help!
I see you are experiencing issues with the HP Pavilion Notebook Internal SD reader goes into read only mode
Usually, a memory SD card or USB flash drive itself has been locked into "read only" mode; it's because the card is getting old, damaged, corrupted, or infected by a virus.
I have a few recommendations
- Unlock Read-Only SD Card with Physical Write Protection Tab.
You can see a sliding lock on the side of the SD card that we can move either upward or downward.
When you slide it downward, it locks the card by making it read-only. In this way, you can’t delete anything from the card, format it, or write anything on it. To remove the write-protection feature, just swipe up the slider to unlock it. You can now perform both the read and write operations on it.
-
Change its value in the Registry Editor
Registry Editor is the inbuilt utility tool in Windows that is used to store vital information regarding various system processes. Therefore, if your SD card is not locked, but you are still not able to write anything on it, then you need to check its “Write Protected” feature on Registry Editor.
Just launch the Run prompt from the Start menu and look for “Regedit” to launch the Registry Editor application.
Now, browse all the way to the location
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentConrolSet/Control/StorageDevicePolicies from the slider on the left. On the right, you can see a “WriteProtect” key that you can right-click and change the value to “0”. If not, then you can right-click and create a new key with the name “WriteProtect” and the default value as “0”.
-
Format the memory card via CMD
Just launch the Command Prompt application (as an admin) and enter the following commands: disk part: to open the Disk Partition utility list disk: to view the disk number of the SD card select disk 2: considering SD card’s disk number is disk 2 clean: to wipe the data of the memory card create partition primary: to create the specified partition format fs=ntfs: to format the memory card in the preferred file system
If none of the above solutions cease to work, then there might be a more serious issue with your memory card.
To resolve this, you can consider formatting your memory card, which will also erase its stored data.

None of those options were helpful.
Option 1: As I tried to be clear on, it's not the switch on the card. This should have been reinforced by:
a. if I reboot it works (meaning if I don't take the card out it worked, meaning I cannot move the lock switch if I never remove the card).
b. It never locks in USB readers.
Again, please let's not go there. I'm not an idiot! and I tried very hard to make that clear.
Option 2. check a registry setting.
This one seems like a good idea, but I don't have the subkey as listed in the suggestion. Please see the attached pic:
I have something alphabetically before and after it, but not the one listed.
So, I thought I'd be smart, with my SD card inserted (and in Read only mode), I searched the entire registry for "WriteProtect”, it was only found in 1 place, a key called ="EnableStackOverwriteProtectionExperiment", and I think it's fair to say this is not it.
So, I'm back to square one.
I'd really like to figure out what's going on. It does it with any SD card, so it's not specific.
I'm very focused on... (like a file lock), what process or what function is causing the lock, and how to I find it? Meaning, if I have no way to find out exactly that's causing the lock, the cause will be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Please, any other ideas? or anyone else with ideas?
NOTE: Your comment about the memory card possibly being bad -
This seems very illogical. I stated the card works fine in an external reader. To add more information, I have never lost data that I know of on the card; it's not that old; the card is made by Lexar and it's 512G. The card works in other computers. It does not seem logical to blame the card either after I commented that any card I put into my laptop DOES THE SAME thing!
I believe the key here has something to do with hibernation, and rebooting, and there is something in the operating system or maybe the hardware is going bad??? I don't know, but I'd really like to get to the bottom of it. Hope someone has some ideas.
Thanks,
Ralph
