I have an HP Elite Desk 800 G5 SFF that I've been using for a little over a year now. Since I got it and reinstalled windows 10, my front IO audio jacks have never worked. I recently decided to try and fix it by uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, which only fixed the audio output through my headset, but I still can't use the mic. I've used it with other PCs for testing, so I know it works. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello @ardy97, Welcome to the HP Community.

Thank you for posting your query regarding the audio jack.

We understand that the front 3.5 mm audio jack on your HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF is partially working now after reinstalling the audio drivers. Audio output is detected through the headset, but the microphone is still not being recognized even though the same headset microphone works correctly on other computers.

Since you've already reinstalled the drivers, let's try some troubleshooting steps to determine whether this is a driver configuration issue, an audio jack detection issue, or a hardware-related problem.

1. Verify the Microphone is Detected in Windows

  • Right-click the Speaker icon and select Sounds.
  • Open the Recording tab.
  • Right-click inside the window and enable:
    • Show Disabled Devices
    • Show Disconnected Devices
  • Check whether the headset microphone appears in the list.

2. Check HP Audio Control or Realtek Audio Console

Depending on the installed audio driver:

  • Open Realtek Audio Console or HP Audio Control.
  • Plug the headset into the front audio jack.
  • Look for a prompt asking what device was connected.
  • Select Headset instead of Headphones if prompted.

A headset combines audio output and microphone input, whereas headphones provide audio output only.

3. Confirm the Correct Recording Device

  • Go to Settings > System > Sound > Input.
  • Check whether a headset microphone appears.
  • Set it as the Default Input Device.
  • Test using the built-in microphone level meter.

4. Test the Front Jack Detection

With the headset unplugged and plugged back in:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Audio inputs and outputs.
  • Watch for any changes when connecting the headset.

If Windows detects only a headphone device and never a microphone device, the front audio jack may be misconfigured or not properly detecting a headset connection.

5. Update Chipset and Audio Drivers

Download and install the latest available:

  • Realtek Audio Driver
  • Intel Chipset Driver

for the HP EliteDesk 800 G5 SFF from HP Support.

Then restart the system and test again.

6. Test the Rear Audio Ports

If your headset uses a combined TRRS 3.5 mm connector:

  • Test using the rear audio ports (if available).
  • If the rear ports also fail to detect the microphone, the issue is likely driver-related.
  • If the rear ports work correctly, the issue may be isolated to the front I/O assembly or audio jack configuration.

Have a great day!

I'm an HP Employee.
