I am installing Windows 11, after a master boot record failure, but the keyboard and USB port do not detect, resulting in a failure to proceed with the installation

Hi @SL2025

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the situation—it's understandably frustrating when essential input devices fail during a critical recovery step.

Let's walk through a few targeted actions to help restore keyboard and USB functionality during your Windows 11 installation.

Step-by-Step Recovery Suggestions

1. Use a Powered USB Hub

If you're using a USB keyboard or mouse, try connecting through a powered USB hub. This can help bypass low-level power delivery issues during setup.

2. Access BIOS/UEFI Settings

  • Power off the device completely.
  • Power it on and immediately press Esc, F10, or Del repeatedly to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  • Once inside, check:
    • Legacy USB Support: Ensure it's enabled.
    • Fast Boot: Disable it temporarily.
    • Secure Boot: Consider disabling it if using a bootable USB created outside of HP's ecosystem.

Save changes and exit.

3. Recreate the Bootable USB

Sometimes the installation media itself can cause device detection issues.

4. Try a Different USB Port

  • Use rear I/O ports if available.
  • Avoid USB 3.0 ports during installation—some setups respond better to USB 2.0 ports.

5. Load Drivers Manually During Setup

If the installer loads but doesn’t detect input devices:

  • On the “Windows Setup” screen, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.
  • Use drvload to manually load USB or chipset drivers if available on a secondary USB stick.

I understand how disruptive this can be, especially after a boot record failure. You’ve already taken a proactive step by initiating the reinstall—let’s make sure the hardware doesn’t hold you back.

Let me know how it goes.
