Hi @David4722
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating issue where the keyboard works fine in BIOS and Safe Mode, but not in regular Windows 10. Since you've already tried updating drivers, scanning for viruses, formatting Windows, and reinstalling the OS, there are still a few troubleshooting steps we can try:
1. Check for Malware or Corruption
Sometimes malware or corrupted system files can cause this type of issue, even if you've already scanned for viruses. Let's run some additional scans to ensure everything is clean and your system is intact.
- Run a System File Check (SFC):
- Press Windows + X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
- In the Command Prompt window, type:DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the scan to complete. This will check for and repair any corrupted system files that could be causing your keyboard issue.
- Run DISM Tool (Deployment Imaging Service and Management Tool):
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again (Windows + X → Command Prompt (Admin)).
- Type the following command and press Enter:sfc /scannow
- Let the process finish, as this tool can repair system image corruption that SFC may not have been able to fix.
2. Check Keyboard Settings in Device Manager
You mentioned that you already updated drivers, but let's double-check everything related to the keyboard and mouse in Device Manager:
- Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards section. Right-click your keyboard driver and select Uninstall device. Then restart your computer, and Windows should automatically reinstall the correct driver.
- Also, check under Mice and other pointing devices for any issues. Right-click and select Update driver for the mouse if necessary.
3. Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts
Since the keyboard works in Safe Mode, it’s possible that a third-party software is interfering with its operation in regular Windows mode. Some applications like keyboard mappers, accessibility tools, or even certain background programs can cause this behavior.
- Clean Boot:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab and check the box to Hide all Microsoft services.
- Click Disable all, then go to the Startup tab and open Task Manager.
- Disable all non-essential startup items.
- Close Task Manager and click OK.
- Restart your computer to perform a clean boot.
This will start Windows with only essential drivers and services, and you can check if the issue persists. If it doesn't, you can enable items one by one to identify the conflicting software.
I hope this helps.
