I have 2 HP Pavilions that stopped taking keyboard input at about the same time 2 days ago. They share a network with 3 other non-HP computers that are unaffected. It almost has to be a bad update or HP only malware. The units work in safemode. They scan clean. Before I resort to a full recovery and have to start all over does anyone know what might have happened? Are other people having this problem?

@RonnieBeck, Thanks for your quick response and time.
I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.
Try the steps recommended below.
1. Go to your device manager (Right click Computer, click manage, select device manager)
2. Right-click the device name in the list that corresponds to your keyboard
3. Click update software driver, click browse computer for drivers
4. Click search from a list of existing drivers
5. Uncheck show compatible hardware
6. Select Microsoft on the left side
7. Select Microsoft Basic Keyboard
8. Click next and install the driver.
Do the same with the mouse except for select Microsoft Basic Mouse.
If the issue still persists try performing a system restore or system recovery and check if it helps.
I'll watch your reply!
Take Care! 🙂

Hey there! @RonnieBeck, Thanks for stopping by HP forums!
I understand keys on the keyboard on your laptop has stopped functioning.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Have you tried checking with an external keyboard does it work fine?
Please try the steps recommended below.
If your keyboard is not working, try the following steps:
Shut down the computer and restart.
Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if the Startup Menu screen displays.
NOTE:
If the Startup Menu screen does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The integrated keyboard in the Notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the notebook PC, connect a USB wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer.
If the Startup Menu screen opens, press the F10 key to open the BIOS settings. Press F5 to load the default settings, then press F10 to accept the changes.
Restart the computer.
If the keyboard works in Windows, you are done.
If the keyboard is not working in Windows, continue with these steps to uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software in Device Manager.
Click Start, then click Control Panel.
Control Panel opens.
Click Hardware and Sound.
Click Device Manager under Devices and Printers.
Device Manager opens.
Click View, and select Show Hidden Devices.
Double-click Keyboards, right-click the keyboard name, then click Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
Restart the computer.
The keyboard should now work correctly.
Your computer comes with several software programs that can test the keyboard for key or hardware failures.
Refer this article to further troubleshoot keyboard issues with your laptop.
Let me know how it goes!

No luck so far but I am running the HP diagnostics at the moment. It's so odd because it does work in safemode so the keyboard can't be bad. I did a system restore on one of the units and it works perfectly now although it needs updates which are happening as I write. So far the diagnostics passed everything. If I don't figure it out on the second unit (the dv7) I'll eventually do a complete restore on it as well. Thanks for responding though. Our 2 Pavilions have been fantastic machines.

Nothing has worked so I will just do a system restore - I did that on one of the units and it is running great so now I'll do it with the second unit. Thank you for you assistance. It was certainly worth trying to do. I'm impressed anyone cared enough to help out with an older unit. HP is fantastic.
