HP 14-dq0000 Laptop PC series (173C3AV)
I have an HP laptop not sure which one it is, and I use it for school. In the middle of class today the keyboard stopped working and hasn’t worked since I’ve restarted it and now every time, I click a key it makes a clicking noise

Hey @Irisherrin, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your laptop's Filter Keys feature might be acting up ⚙️, or perhaps there's a little hiccup with your keyboard drivers. Let's try some gentle steps to get your keys responding smoothly again. ⌨️➡️😊

It does sound like your laptop’s "Filter Keys" feature might have accidentally switched on, like a secret setting suddenly changing things! 🕵️‍♀️ Or, it could be a little software gremlin 👾 in your keyboard drivers.
Let's try these steps to fix it:

Disable Filter Keys

  1. Open Settings (Win + I).
  2. Go to Ease of Access > Keyboard.
  3. Look for Filter Keys and turn it off.

Check Keyboard Drivers

  1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click on your keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your laptop—Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

Reset BIOS Settings:

  • Shut down your laptop.
  • Press the Power button, and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly to open the Startup Menu.
  • Press F10 to open BIOS settings.
  • Press F5 to load default settings, then press F10 to save and exit.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Disconnect all external devices and the charger.
  3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger and power it on.

Check for External Keyboard Issues

  • If an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard works, the issue might be hardware-related.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics:

  • Download and install the latest version of HP PC Hardware Diagnostics for Windows.
  • Open the tool and run the Keyboard Test under Component Tests to identify any hardware issues.

I hope this helps. ⌨️➡️😊

Take care, and have a wonderfully productive day! ☀️
