I have a 17-cn300 that will not program. The laptop has 2 slots internal m.2 SSD and a SATA when i install a hard drive in either slot it says install a OS on your drive. the drives i have installed some already had a OS on them and some not. i have tried 6 or 7 different drives. Now with the drive installed, i get a message saying that the drive installed has failed everytime. i have tried to do this with a external drive also with the same results. i have worked on laptops for 15 years and have never come across a problem like this before. also i tried to reinstall the BIOS no go.

Hi @bookstore1369,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you are experiencing some issues with your HP 17-cn300 laptop not recognizing or accepting the operating system installed on your drives. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:

Troubleshooting Guide:

Check BIOS Settings:

  • Enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by rebooting and pressing F10 repeatedly as soon as the laptop starts.
  • Ensure that your SATA Mode is set to AHCI. If your previous OS installation was done using RAID or IDE, ensure compatibility or change to AHCI.
  • Check if the drives are detected in the BIOS. If they aren't, it could indicate a connection issue.

Drive Connection:

  • Make sure all the SSDs and HDDs are properly connected in their respective slots.
  • If the drives are not being recognized, try using different M.2 slots or the SATA connector.

Boot Order:

  • Set the proper boot order so that the laptop boots from the hard drive with the installed OS.
  • Make sure no USB or external drives are set as primary boot devices unless you intend to boot from them.

Installing a New Operating System:

  • If you're attempting a fresh OS installation, ensure your bootable media (USB or DVD) is formatted correctly and contains the proper installation files.
  • You might need to disable Secure Boot in BIOS if you're not using a certified copy of Windows.

Check for Disk Errors:

  • Test the drives using the Diagnostic Tool available in the BIOS (Press F2 during startup to access diagnostics).
  • Consider using a separate computer to ensure the drives aren't failing physically.

Firmware and BIOS Updates:

  • Check for any available BIOS updates on the Official HP® Support that might resolve drive recognition issues.

Try Different Drives:

  • You mentioned trying several drives; ensure the drives themselves are functioning by testing them in another computer, if possible.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
