Hi @RC491,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Pavilion - 15 laptop is experiencing unexpected shutdowns regardless of whether it's plugged into the AC adapter or running on battery. This could be due to several possible issues.
- Overheating: Laptops can shut down automatically if they overheat to prevent damage. Ensure that the vents are clear of dust and debris and that the cooling system is functioning properly.
- Battery Issues: Even if the battery shows a full charge, it could be faulty or not holding a charge properly, causing the laptop to shut down unexpectedly.
- Software or Driver Problems: Sometimes, faulty drivers or software can cause the system to crash or shut down unexpectedly. Updating drivers and performing a system checkup might help.
- Power Settings: Check your power settings to ensure that the laptop is not set to shut down or sleep unexpectedly.
Given that you cannot complete a battery calibration due to the shutdowns, it might indicate a more serious hardware issue with either the battery, power supply, or internal components. Here’s what you can try:
- Check for Overheating: Use compressed air to clean out the vents and ensure proper airflow. You might also consider using a cooling pad.
- Run Diagnostics: Many HP laptops have built-in diagnostics tools accessible during startup (usually by pressing F2 or ESC during boot). Use these tools to check for hardware issues, including battery health.
- Update Drivers and BIOS: Ensure that all drivers and the BIOS are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause instability.
- Check Power Settings: Adjust power settings to ensure the laptop is not set to shut down or sleep unexpectedly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the reply, I cleaned the vents, with compressed air, and now the diagnostic tool tells me my battery needs replacing, which is strange, as I replaced it less than a year ago. All my drivers are up to date, and I have run all the diagnostic checks. It appears, that, from the HP website, that there are no updates to my BIOS. I have also checked that the fan is switched to 'on' in the BIOS. I have not heard the fan recently, so it could be that this is faulty. My power settings, are all correct. I am now thinking of cutting my loses, and investing in a new lap top. Many thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
