Hi, I have a laptop with a black screen that will not boot. The user stated that she accidentally interrupted a BIOS update. I’ve already tried the Win+V and Win+B + Power key combinations, as well as the CMOS reset method suggested on your website, but none have worked to recover the BIOS.

Hi @PatrickAgo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Interrupting a BIOS update can cause severe corruption, which explains why your HP laptop now shows a black screen and won’t boot. Since Win+B, Win+V, and CMOS reset didn’t work, here are the next steps:

Step 1: Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  2. Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  4. Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try powering on.
(This clears hardware states before recovery.)

Step 2: BIOS Recovery Using USB

If key combos fail, you need a BIOS Recovery USB drive:

  1. On a working PC, go to Official HP® Support.
  2. Enter your laptop’s exact model number.
  3. Download the latest BIOS update utility (.exe).
  4. Run the file and select Create Recovery USB.
  5. Insert the USB into the affected laptop.
  6. Hold Win + B (or Win + V) and press the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the power but keep holding the keys until you hear beeps or see the BIOS recovery screen.
  7. Follow on-screen prompts to restore the BIOS.
(This method works even if the internal display is blank.)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
