Microsoft Windows 11

Hi there,

Just wondering why whenever I plug in my AC adapter to charge my laptop the CPU speed drops significantly from around 2 Ghz to 0.17 Ghz. I have tried different AC adapters but I get the same results. The speed jumps back up straight away when I remove from charge. I have ran CPU and battery tests using the HP PC hardware diagnostic app but it is giving me the all clear and showing no signs that there is an issue with the laptop.

Any ideas on a possible fix?

Thanks

Hi @Justin1241,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP laptop's CPU slows down significantly when the AC adapter is plugged in, there are a few possible reasons for this.

  • Power settings: The power settings on your laptop might be set to lower performance when the laptop is running on AC power. You can check this by going to the Control Panel > Power Options and selecting the "High Performance" power plan. You can also adjust the advanced power settings to ensure that the CPU is set to run at maximum performance when the laptop is plugged in.
  • Overheating: If your laptop is overheating, it might be throttling the CPU to prevent damage. Make sure that the laptop's vents are clean and free of dust and that the fan is functioning properly. You can also try using a laptop cooling pad to help dissipate heat.
  • Malware or viruses: Malware or viruses can cause your CPU to slow down significantly. Make sure that you have up-to-date antivirus software installed and run a full system scan.
  • Faulty AC adapter: If your laptop's AC adapter is faulty or not providing enough power, this can cause the CPU to slow down. Try using a different AC adapter or replacing the current one.
  • Hardware issues: There may be an issue with your laptop's hardware, such as a faulty CPU or motherboard.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
