Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Last week my HP laptop less than two years old began crashing.  The crashes became more frequent and were accompanied by a grinding noise in some cases.  It has now died - can't run any system diagnostics as it wont go more than about 3 minutes between crashes.  I suspect a hardware failure but have no way of verifying as can't run any diagnostics.  The laptop has never been bashed or carried around, I have always used it in the house.  Needless to say I  am seriously unimpressed with HP products right now!

This can be  hardware issue as well as a Windows issue. You can check that by booting a live ubuntu USB. Its pretty simple actually. You would need a separate PC to create the USB disk though.

Once the USB is prepared, provided that your laptop is still powering on, you can plug the USB disk BEFORE powering on the laptop, then immediately press F9 to see a list of devices, and select the USB. Do check some youtube videos if you are new to this.

If ubuntu is working fine without crashing, the maximum hardware damage, if any, will probably be your hard disk. It can also be a windows issue, you might be able to get away with a simple clean install of windows.

Good luck.
