HP ENVY Notebook

Hello, I have a problem on my HP ENVY Notebook where the laptop only charges when it's powered off. When it's powered off, it has a red LED light (does not blink), but when I turn it on, it just stops charging and the LED light turns white. I have already tested:

1. Uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery

2. Testing the battery using HP Assistant (Passed)

3. Updating to the latest software

4. I cannot factory reset because it requires the laptop to be charging, but when I plug in my adapter, nothing happens.

5. Using another adapter to try charging

If this helps, when I plug in my adapter, nothing happens. (No messages, nothing that shows there is a problem except the fact that it isn't actually charging)

No way I know of since F2 System Diagnostics is not showing any problems. If you have a local computer repair shop they may be able to test with their equipment

I have also already checked for loose cable, or if my source is not plugged in. I have seen a lot of posts where the problem is where it displays the message "plugged in, not charging," but my computer does not have that and just simply does not charge. It was working just the day before, and I have not installed or opened anything new, just the regular stuff like documents and games.

Immediately after powering on start tapping the Esc key. This will open a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is an option. Tap F2 key and look for Component tests. Select it and look for Power category where you can test power adapter and battery. If both pass you might test your systemboard/motherboard.

Hi CheryIG, Thank you for your help! However, I have tested both my battery and my systemboard, and both of the tests passed, so I still don't what the exact problem is...

Did you also test the power adapter?

Sorry for the late reply. I do not see where it tests the adapter, but assume it will not be able to locate it, since my laptop thinks it is not there.

Also, I have tested another working adapter, as it can charge the other laptop perfectly fine, but it does not work on the one that is not working.

Since it charges while shut down that would normally point toward your power adapter not working at optimum capacity to charge and run the laptop at the same time. However since a second power adapter shows the same behavior it would appear more likely to be the power port on the laptop.:

How old is your laptop? If you are still within the 1 year warranty  I would contact HP for service:

Thank you so much for helping. I just have another question though, if the problem is in the port, then how is it possible the laptop can perfectly charge when its shut down? Also, my warranty is gone. More help would be appreciated!

I am not 100% certain it is the port. It could be other circuitry that passes power from the charger to battery I suppose. The weakness that causes it to not charge when powered on is similar to a faulty charger that can output enough watts to charge while shut down but not while running.
