Hi @6i,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The message you're encountering suggests that your HP 17 Laptop is missing critical recovery information needed to start up, and it's prompting you to create a recovery USB drive (referred to as a "recovery dongle"). Here are the steps you can follow to address this issue.
Create a Windows Recovery USB Drive
You'll need another working computer with internet access and a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Follow these steps to create a recovery drive:
Download the Media Creation Tool:
- Visit the Microsoft Windows 10 download page.
- Download the "Media Creation Tool" and run it.
Create the Installation Media:
- Choose "Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC".
- Select the appropriate language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for your HP laptop.
- Choose "USB flash drive" and select your USB drive from the list.
Complete the Process:
- The tool will download Windows and create the recovery USB drive.
Boot from the Recovery USB Drive
Insert the Recovery USB Drive:
- Plug the USB drive into your HP 17 Laptop.
Access the Boot Menu:
- Power on your laptop and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
- Press F9 to open the Boot Device Options menu.
Select the USB Drive:
- Use the arrow keys to select the USB drive and press Enter.
Use the Recovery Options
Install Windows:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install or repair Windows.
- If you need to recover your system, look for the "Repair your computer" option at the bottom left of the Windows Setup screen.
Troubleshoot:
- Select "Troubleshoot" from the options presented.
- You can try various recovery options like "Startup Repair", "System Restore", or "Reset this PC".
Additional Tips
- Backup Your Data: If possible, backup your data before performing a full reset or reinstall, as these operations can erase your files.
- Check BIOS Settings: Ensure that the BIOS settings are correct and that the boot order prioritizes the USB drive.
Following these steps should help you resolve the issue and get your HP 17 Laptop back up and running.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
