Hi, for the last few days my laptop fan has decided to constantly run on full blast even with no background process taking up usage, I can run the task manager and the only process using the cpu is the task manager itself. The fan runs immedietly on power up.
Iv'e checked the BIOS for 'fan always on' which is disabled.
I've checked recent updates and only this has been installed in the last few days...

This is very loud and very annoying, can someone please help?

That component appears to have nothing to do with the fan.
It is dated May 15, 2024 and the latest BIOS release, F66, is dated May 17, 2024
Was the bios updated? Do you have F66 bios?
What do you mean by
'fan always on' which is disabled. |
Have you run diagnostics?
Tap the ESC key after powering on to run diagnostics.
Do not allow any updates if disk or memory fail, especially a BIOS update.
If your system is under warranty you might consider upgrading to F66 although the release history shows no fix for fan speed problems.
It is always dangerous to upgrade bios. Unless there is a real need and the HP support assistant requests the upgrade, I would not do it. Look at the BIOS revision history and see if an upgrade is useful. Updates that improve security are needed in a corporate environment but for gaming system they will likely slow down your system. Your CPU may be stuck in turbo speed. In turbo, the fan on many laptops run at the highest speed
Enter the phrase 'edit power plan' in the window search box
Then select the 'Advanced' tab
Change the %100 to %99 to prevent the CPU from entering turbo speed.
Verify CPU speed using this tool
You might be able to check for GPU/CPU temperature problems using this tool and selecting "sensors"

Hi, thanks for the reply. Okay...
So the BIOS version is F63, so I do have the option of updating that, but I'll wait for now becasue of the potential risks you metioned, the laptop is not under warranty.
'fan always on' is a setting in BIOS you can enable or disable, I have this disabled.
I've run diagnostics, everything I have run has come back fine.
I've tried changing the maximum processor state in power management plan, but no change there.
The tool shows the cores at running at a temp in the low 30 degrees.
I'm not sure what you mean by verify CPU speed using the tool. When I run it theres a tab saying Core speed? Is this what you want? That seems erratic, constanlty jumping from anywhere from 600Mhz to 4000Mhz, The mutiplier jumps around too.
Is this significant? Any other ideas?

Speed is jumping around is normal. If running CPU intensive apps one would expect to see it at high speed most of the time.
Could "fan always on" mean that it is to be put into or out of automatic speed control mode?
I have seen some really bad translations of bios functions. Has the fan speed always been fast?
I do not know of any fan speed control apps other than those that come with gaming laptops.

That indicates a driver problem. Look at the windows update history and uninstall any driver updates from the time the problem occurred. The drivers to look for would be Intel related rather than a Windows feature update.
