HP ENVY - 17-bw0000na
Microsoft Windows 11

I have tried to reset the laptop numerous times but it keeps crashing. After reinstalling  it starts and stops with green error screen. It then goes into diagnosis mode but then returns to the BSOD error. It keeps trying to repair the disk but fails. I have tried running scannow and chdisk but no joy. Although my laptop is out of waranty can I get it fixed by HP? In command mode the drive shows as the x: directory rather than C: the BSOD has stop code0x00c000021a. The laptop also has a Optane disk but I do not know if this is relevant. I have a previous laptop that failed due to a failed graphic chip and I retrieved the hardrive as spare storage. Can this be used to replace the one in ththe machine? Not sure what to do next.

Hi @Kevin439,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help you!

Splendid analysis and remarkable patience were shown. It is immensely appreciated.

The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with the stop code 0xC000021A usually indicates a critical system process has failed. This error often happens because of corrupted system files, incompatible drivers, or software conflicts. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and attempt to resolve the issue on your HP ENVY - 17-bw0000na:

1. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Safe Mode allows you to boot your system with minimal drivers and can help you diagnose whether the issue is caused by software or drivers.
  • To enter Safe Mode:
    1. Turn off your laptop.
    2. Turn it back on and immediately start pressing the F8 or F11 key repeatedly until you see the recovery options.
    3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings.
    4. Click Restart and then choose Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking if you need internet access).

2. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM

  • If you can boot into Safe Mode, run the System File Checker (SFC) to scan and repair corrupted system files.
    1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    3. Wait for the process to complete and see if any issues are found and repaired.
  • You can also run DISM to repair the Windows image:
    1. In the same Command Prompt, type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.

3. Uninstall Recent Updates or Drivers

  • If the issue started after a recent Windows update or driver installation, it might be causing the BSOD.
  • In Safe Mode, go to Settings > Update & Security > View update history to uninstall recent updates.
  • For drivers, go to Device Manager, locate any recently installed drivers, and roll them back or uninstall them.

4. Check for Software Conflicts

  • If you recently installed new software, it could be causing the issue. Uninstall any recent programs to see if the problem resolves.

5. Perform a System Restore

  • If you have a restore point from before the issue started, you can use System Restore to revert your system to a previous state.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
    2. Choose a restore point and follow the on-screen instructions.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Hi @Kevin439,

Please find the next steps below.

6. Check Disk for Errors

  • Run the CHKDSK utility to check for and repair any disk errors.
    1. In Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and press Enter.
    2. You may be prompted to schedule the scan on the next reboot. Confirm this and restart your system.

7. Update BIOS/UEFI

  • Ensure your BIOS/UEFI is up to date. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues leading to BSODs.
  • Visit the HP Support website for your specific model to download and install the latest BIOS version.
  • If you do not find the Bios for your current OS Windows 11, this could be a compatible issue. You may try the original OS which came preinstalled with the unit.

8. Perform a Repair Install or Reset Windows

  • If none of the above steps work, you may need to repair your Windows installation or reset your PC.
    • You can use the Repair your computer option in the Windows installation media.
    • Alternatively, go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC and choose to keep your files or remove everything.

9. Check for Hardware Issues

  • If the problem persists, it could be related to hardware. Run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to check for any hardware failures.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thank you Eloh_NR for your reply. I had tried all your suggestions and got nowhere. In the end I decided to attempt to change the Hard drive and swap it with one from my previous  laptop that died due to graphics chip failing. I found a set of videos online and after watching them a few times I summoned the courage to open the laptop. I installed the disk drive and after putting the machine back together was then faced with reinstalling win 11. I tried rufus but that failed. I then tried downloading an install copy of win 11. This was successful but I then had problems with the installation. In the end I had to delete partitions on my old drive. This was successful andI spent hours installing all my programs. The problems were mainly due insufficient instructions on choosing why I needed to remove the old partitions. Anyway, I am able to sleep a bit better at night! I am 71years old and have taught myself since windows 3 and have taught  some computing to students while being a science teacher.  Always been interested in problem solving and learning about coputers
