Something this OLD is going to have an laptop hard drive -- and those are painfully slow, even when they are working well.
I have an HP laptop of similar age and I replaced the 500GB internal hard drive with a 500GB SSD and the performance got a LOT better.
It is also likely, with a drive this old, that it is simply failing -- especially if it ran faster long ago and has slowed down a lot over time.
So, to check out the drive, press the Esc key repeatedly while rebooting and when the HP menu comes up, press F2 to do the diagnostics tests.
