HP Pavilion x360 - 11-ad023tu
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a HP Pavilion x360 - 11-ad023tu that I just bought about 8 months ago. Since now everything was fine and I had no issues. But as off yesterday, my computer is restarting like crazy, about every 30 mintues. I unchecked automatic restart upon system error, but still it is restarting. I also tried updating the BIOS but it said failed and couldn't complete it. This also started happening after I updated it to the latest windows it ask me to do which I did 2 days ago. Also sometime it's doing which happened twice now is all of a sudden that computer will completely freeze and no matter how long I wait it won't come back and I have to force restart it.

Someone please help me as I have work and I need this laptop stable.

Hi! @SG04, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand your laptop keeps restarting randomly.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?

Have you tried checking with a different battery or adapter?

Is your laptop getting overheated?

Does the laptop restart when you are in BIOS?

Splendid analysis and remarkable patience shown. It is immensely appreciated.

Try updating the BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link. Click Here

Try restoring the BIOS to default and check if it helps.

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Try the steps recommended below.

1. Use Windows shortcut keys Win + PauseBreak to open the System window.

2. Select Advanced system settings from the left column and the System Properties will pop up.

3. Choose Advanced tab and click on the button Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.

4. Disable Automatically restart under System Failure, and then click OK.

1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Power Options. You can also access to this by right click on the battery icon in the taskbar if you are using a laptop.

2. Click on the Change plan settings beside the current plan the PC is using.

3. Click on the Change advanced power settings.

4. Navigate to and expand the Processor power management.

5. Expand the Minimum processor state and set the values lower than 100%. And then click OK.

6. Modify the Put the computer to sleep setting when using power or battery. Set the time value between 1 minute and 5 hours.

7. Save the changes and reboot.

Also, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are working fine.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.

Let me know if this works!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂

No, I have not made any recent software or hardware changed besides updating to the latest Windows 10 Update. I do not have another adapter to test with, and this model of laptop does not have a removable battey. I can not tell whether it is getting overheated, the laptop is hot, but I don't know if to the temp causing to overheat. I have not tested going to BIOS and see if it restarts. I tried updating the BIOS, and first it fails creating a partition, and then after 5 mintues and says it failed to update BIOS. I did disable Automatic Restart.

As of now, it keeps crashing and sometimes all of a sudden freezes, and I am forced to restart it.

I download BlueScreenViewer by Nirsoft, and when I checked every dump file, it said: Caused by Driver - ntoskrnl.exe

Hopefully any of this helps you understand.

Thank you!

@SG04, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

As you mentioned you are getting a ntoskrnl.exe error on your PC.

It looks like few of the operating system files on your PC has got corrupted or deleted due to which are facing this error.

Try the steps recommended below.

On your keyboard, press the Windows key and X at the same time, then click Computer management.

Expand Services and Applications and click Services.
Double-click Windows Search.
In General tab, click Stop.
Wait for the service to stop, then press OK to save the change and exit.

.Press Windows + S to open Search Box.
Type Windows Defender, then click it.
In Home tab, select Full under Scan options.
Click Scan now to begin the thorough scanning of your computer.
Wait for the process to finish.

The below is additional help with some of the methods in the "Tips to improve...." link.
Windows Key + X - Command Prompt (Admin)

SFC /scannow

Note if that shows uncorrected errors - do the below regardless.

When that completes run these :

DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Note if that shows any uncorrected errors - do the below regardless.

Then restart the computer.

Let me know if this helps!

Take Care! 🙂

Hello again,

I was able to do as you say and disable the Windows Search service.

However, I could not finish the Windows Defender Full scan, as it again crashed while it was doing it.

I also attempted to do the SFC /scannow command, but in process of it scanning, it again crashed.

Therefore I was not able to do anything else.

I again checked after each of these crashes and they are all still caused by driver ntoskrnl.exe

Thanks.

Hi,

If you keep getting the same issue and it still crashes, I'd like to confirm if you did a quick memory test or a full test. I suggest doing an extended memory test and a hardware diagnostics as the error ntoskrnl.exe is connected to hardware issues as well. For the hardware diagnostics, contact your device manufacturer directly as they are the one performing the test.
