I recently did a re-install of WIndows 10. In the last few days, if I shut the lid at night while the laptop is on battery power, the next morning I wake up and the computer has fully shut down, even though it's only set to sleep.

 

  • In Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Power Options --> System Settings, all 4 options (when I close the lid on battery and when plugged in, and when I press the power button on battery and when plugged in) are set to "sleep".
  • The battery is fully charged when this happens, so it's not happening due to low battery.
  • My BIOS is up to date.
  • This is not due to Windows updates; they are currently paused, and the last one was 7/11/22, even though the laptop did this the last two nights (7/19/22 and 7/18/22)

The only thing I can think of that might be disturbing this is that "Fast startup" is disabled - but it needs to be that way as I have veracrypt on my system, and it recommends disabling fast startup.

 

Any ideas what could be going on? This is causing issues. Thanks.

This happened again last night, even though I kept it plugged in all night. So it appears this happened regardless if it's plugged in or not. It just seems if the computer is inactive for a certain number of hours, it shuts down, even though the settings instruct it only to sleep.

For anyone who might come across this in the future, I figured out what was going on. The computer was actually hibernating, not shutting down. This can be changed in advanced options.

 

  • Right click battery icon, select "Power Options"

  • Under "select plan", click "change plan settings" for the plan you have selected.

  • Click "change advanced power options" on the new screen. This brings up a new dialog box with many options.

  • Check for the setting "hibernate after". When I looked at mine, I discovered it was set to: On Battery: 180 minutes and Plugged in: 180 minutes.

Once I increased the time on those settings, the problem went away.

P.S. Rather than modifying your existing setting, you can also create a whole new power setting and switch between them. (You can find that in Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Power Options) create power plan.png

Once you've created the new plan just go back and press that 'change plan settings' button, and then "change advanced power options" on the next page, and you can alter those hibernate and other values just the same.
