HP ENVY x360 Laptop - 15-ed0002nc
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi,

After updating from Windows 11 21H2 to 22h2, my intergrated laptop keyboard has stopped working completly. Power button, touchpad, fingerprint reader and any external keyboards work fine.

I'm pretty sure it's a software issue (specifically an issue from within windows) as it works just fine under bios and other OS (Fedora Linux).

Note: The laptop was docked and connected to an external keyboard during the entire update process. It might not have installed the driver due to that.

Things I've tried:

-Restarting

-Uninstalling all devices under "keyboards" category using device manager and restarting (clicked show hidden devices)

-Installing all windows updates including optional ones

-Manually installing keyboard driver from HP website (Complained about my windows version being too recent and refused to continue. Compatibility mode did not help)

-Checking for driver updates using HP support asisatant (did not find anything keyboard related)

-Safe mode (did not work when booted to windows, however it DID work when in the startup settings menu - see picture at the end)

-sfc /scannow and DISM (found no problems)

Just an idea: "Updating" to the same windows version using Windows 11 installation assistant might help, as it essentially reinstalls the OS while preserving all data. It does not allow it of course but there might be a way to bypass the check.

Yes, I could just do a regular OS reinstall but I consider it last resort as it takes a long time to setup all the software afterwards.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I've managed to fix it!

I went to safe mode, but this time uninstalled ALL (~20) devices under "HID compilant devices" not just devices under keyboards. This is not a very good idea since your input devices like mice etc. will stop working eventually so I had plug in different ones when they did, but after I rebooted (you might be forced to do a hard shutdown) the drivers reinstalled automatically and the keyoboard finally WORKS!

Note: Only do this if you ran out of options as it is possible Windows will NOT reinstall the drivers automatically after reboot and you will be left with an OS that can't be controlled! It's still fixable, don't worry, but probably only with an OS reinstall.
