Hello. I have the following problem since I bought the laptop 1.5 years ago. So I'm working for example on some task for University. Therefore I have for example some open tabs like google chrome, Word or Powerpoint and so on (doesn't matter which software). So then you maybe want to do a lunch break and continue your work on the laptop after eating. You have then the option to either Press Windows + L, close the laptop or put him in Energy saving mode. After the break, normally you open your laptop and can continue to work on your tasks in all the open programms.

BUT now comes my problem. If I close my laptop, press Windows + L or put him into energy saving, he sometimes randomly shut down all the open tabs. So all my open tabs are then gone when I open the laptop. This happens about 15 times out of 20. It happens if the laptop is in battery mode and also if plugged in to power. Sometimes it happened if I had my laptop closed for 5 minutes, sometimes 1 day, sometimes a few hour. There is no regular time when he shuts down. Sometimes it shuts down, sometime not.

But the normality should be that, if you open your laptop after for example Windows L, you should be able to continue with your work and not that he is shut down.

How can I figure out what the problem is? The HP Support is not really a big help.

Hi @Timonir7

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s incredibly frustrating when your laptop shuts down instead of preserving your session after locking or entering sleep. I’m really sorry you’ve had to deal with this for so long—especially when you’re in the middle of important work.

Let’s walk through a few precise steps to help identify and resolve what’s causing this behavior.

Why this happens

This issue is often linked to power settings, fast startup, or driver/firmware conflicts. Windows may be misinterpreting sleep or lock commands as shutdown triggers, especially if the system encounters a power state error or fails to resume properly.

Step-by-step actions to stabilize sleep and lock behavior

1. Adjust power and lid settings

  1. Open Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Click Choose what closing the lid does.
  3. Set When I close the lid and When I press the power button to Sleep (not Hibernate or Shut down).
  4. Click Save changes.

2. Disable Fast Startup

  1. In the same Power Options window, click Choose what the power buttons do.
  2. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  3. Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  4. Save and restart your laptop.

3. Check for crash logs

  1. Press Win + X > Event Viewer.
  2. Navigate to Windows Logs > System.
  3. Look for entries around the time of shutdown with Event ID 41 (Kernel-Power) or Event ID 6008.
    • These indicate unexpected shutdowns and can help confirm if the system is crashing instead of sleeping.

4. Update BIOS and chipset drivers

Outdated firmware can cause power state misbehavior.

  • Visit: HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your laptop’s model number.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers listed under “BIOS” and “Driver-Chipset”.

5. Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix tool

This tool can help detect power-related issues:

Let me know what you find in the Event Viewer or how the system behaves after these changes. You’ve done a great job staying observant and persistent—this kind of issue can be subtle, but we’ll get to the bottom of it together.

@Hawks_Eye Hello

I've done now all steps except step 3. I will now test the laptop some days and check if he still shut down randomly.
Thanks

Your steps are not working. The laptop has now again shut down randomly.

The Error message in the event viewer is the following: The computer was restarted after a serious error. The error code was: 0x0000009f (0x0000000000000003, 0xffff89074f08e060, 0xffffad83bb0cf5c0, 0xffff890756910b90). A complete image has been saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\111725-15218-01.dmp. Berichts-ID: fe7c361a-98cc-43a7-bc23-ac3073cf9a14.
Event-ID= 1001
Before that error message above I have the following critical event: The system was restarted without being shut down properly. This error can occur if the system has stopped responding or crashed, or if the power supply has been unexpectedly interrupted.. Event-ID = 41

What the hell can I do? Getting frustrated with this laptop as it as a brand new one from the HP shop itself...
