Hello,
I am re-installing software (from a usb flash drive). It's taking a long time to load. All it gets to is the HP logo and starts circling as if to prepare to download. Should I just let it go for a while or restart and follow the steps with f9 key. Thanks

Hi @emg1279,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. How long has it been stuck on the HP logo with the spinning circle (minutes vs. hours)?
  2. Are you reinstalling Windows from an HP recovery USB or a standard Windows installation USB?
  3. Do you notice any activity at all (USB light blinking, fan spinning, screen flickering)?
  4. Did this laptop previously have drive or boot errors before you started reinstalling?

What you can try now

1. Give it a bit of time (if it hasn’t been too long yet)
If it’s been under 30–45 minutes, it’s usually safe to wait a little longer especially on older hardware or slower USB drives. The first stage can sometimes appear frozen even though it’s still working.

2. If it’s been over an hour with no change
At that point, it’s reasonable to stop and restart:

  • Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds to shut it down completely.
  • Remove the USB, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert it.

3. Use F9 to choose the boot device manually

  • Power on and repeatedly tap F9.
  • Select your USB flash drive from the boot menu.
  • This ensures the laptop is actually booting from the installer and not looping on the internal drive.

4. Check BIOS settings (if it keeps looping)

  • Press F10 at startup to enter BIOS.
  • Confirm:
    • Boot mode is correct (usually UEFI).
    • The internal drive is detected.
    • Secure Boot settings match the installer you’re using.

5. Try recreating the USB installer
If the issue keeps repeating, the USB installer itself may be corrupted.

  • Recreate it using a different USB stick if possible.
  • Make sure the download completed fully and correctly.

I hope this helps.

Hi @emg1279,

Thanks for your response.

  • Does the laptop restart repeatedly, or does it stay on one screen?
  • Are you seeing any error message, HP logo loop, or loading circle?
  • How long have you allowed the laptop to stay in the rebooting state?
  • Did the recovery process start successfully from the USB, or did the issue occur immediately after booting from it?
  • Have you tried disconnecting the USB and restarting the laptop?

Once we receive the photo and these details, we’ll be able to guide you more accurately through the next steps.

I hope this helps.
