Hi all,
I’ve had my HP pavilion power for around 6 months now, and the majority of the time it has run fine, however, starting yesterday my laptop won’t boot up past the hp logo, displaying an error “boot device not found” and emitting LED sequences using the caps lock key (it will blink 5 long times and 4 short times)
This started happening straight after receiving a BSOD about an “unexpected store exception”, before then the laptop was running perfectly fine.
I am unable to perform a system restore/factory reset as the hp recovery tool always encounters an error when I try to return the pc back to factory settings. I tried running the advanced system diagnostics tool via F11 however that encounters an error (without displaying any error code) and directs me back to advanced options.
I have run commands in CMD (like bootrec etc) however nothing seems to be working. I have restored the boot order to default settings and that also hasn’t solved the problem.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?? I’m at a loss of what to do, I’m fairly competent with PCs however this is beyond my level!! The laptop was running well (no malicious software, PUPs etc) so I’m unsure as to how this all happened. If necessary I can reinstall windows 10 but I really want to leave that as a last resort.
Thanks

Hey There! @Anubis_Night, Welcome to HP forums!
I understand you have issues booting into your PC and the light on caps lock is blinking 5 times repeatedly.
Don't worry I'd like to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Are you able to boot into BIOS on your PC?
Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.
As @Lil_Boy_Blue mentioned the 5 blinking indicates a system board failure.
The error indicates embedded controller has timed out waiting for the BIOS to return from system board initialization (end of POST).
Try the steps recommended below.
To perform a power reset on a laptop with a removable battery:
Turn off the computer.
Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
Remove the battery from the battery compartment.
With the battery and power cord unplugged, press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain any residual electrical charge from the capacitors.
Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the laptop, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
Try restoring the BIOS to defaults on your PC and check if it helps.
1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps. It is a hardware issue with your PC.
I will share you few details about the service options for your laptop.

Hi
The 5-4 is...
You get a LONG (MAJOR) signal category, RED LED &
then a SHORT (MINOR) signal category, WHITE LED.
Major – the category of the error; Minor – specific error in that category.
The AUDIBLE repeats 5 times, and the VISUAL until power is removed.
Main-Board | 5.4 | The embedded controller has timed out waiting for BIOS to return from Main-Board initialization. | Main-Board isn’t initialising quickly enough for component. 1 Verify the correct power supply being used. 2 Reset CMOS. 3 Reseat components, 4 Test known good components. 5 Replace defective parts found. |
So a Warranty issue methinks.

Hiya @MrRobot,
I haven’t made any hardware changes to the laptop, and software wise the most I did before the laptop started acting up was clearing up the C: drive by moving documents over to my 😧 drive and using ccleaner to clear up temporary files.
I am able to boot into BIOS and I have restored the default boot order already, unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have solved the problem! (My bios version is F 12 by “insyde”)
unfortunately I’m not sure I can peform a power reset as the battery is actually inside the laptop and not removable - I don’t want to open up the casing as I don’t want to void the warranty!
Thank you for your reply, I will definitely check my inbox.

Hi @Lil_Boy_Blue,
thanks for your reply!
I agree, after spending a few days researching similar problems and troubleshooting, I think the problem with my laptop is a hardware issue rather than software/OS.
I will contact HP ASAP - thank you for your support!

@Anubis_Night, Thanks for your prompt response and time.
I appreciate your efforts for writing back to us.
As you mentioned you are able to boot into BIOS and restore the settings to default.
Try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.
Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC. Click Here
Also, after running a system diagnostics test on your PC. if all the test has passed on your PC.
It could be an operating system issue on your PC. Please contact HP phone support and order a set of recovery kit for your PC.
Try performing a system recovery and check if it helps.
Hope this helps!
Take Care! 🙂

I am facing this problem every week and every week I’m paying 25$ to IT technician to troubleshoot it. So he spend even less than 1 mint and problm solves. I have done every thing on Bios setting page but once I saved by pressing F10 key then it shows to “ ENTER” so I press the enter key but it never moved ahead
