Microsoft Windows 11

Laptop is and HP Pavilion x360 convertible i5-dg0xx; Product ID: 8LK69UA#ABA, Bios Date 7/13/2022.

When I tried to logon after a period where the Laptop had not been used for several days, I tried to logon using my pin.  The message came back that the pin was not recognized and it asked me for my password.  Tried the password which did not work.  Reset the password to my Microsoft account and checked it on a separate computer where it worked fine.  Tried the same password on the laptop and it replied that the password was incorrect.  I tried logging on with another user ID and the same thing happened, Pin not recognized, reset password which also was verified on another computer but laptop would not recognize that password for the account.  Have rebooted numerous times and still will not work.  Help please!

Hi @cheddarhed52,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have trouble logging in to the PC using the PIN or password from the current PC even after the password is been set and you can access it on the other device.

Please try the below steps and check if you still have trouble you might have to run a hardware test or might have to re-install Windows on the Pc.

Please try Safe Mode: Starting your device in Safe Mode can help troubleshoot sign-in problems. If you can sign in using Safe Mode, it means that basic device drivers and default settings weren’t causing the sign-in problem.

To restart in Safe Mode:

1. Restart your device by selecting Power > Restart. When you see the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key while you select Power > Restart

2. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart

3. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. The preferred option is to select 5 or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I tried to go to safe mode, but it wouldn't co-operate.   I ended up doing a reset saving my files and that didn't work either. Did another total reset which then let me change the pin.  Have to reload some apps but it appeared to be OK.  After a short while, my password quit working again. I was able to use my pin and was able to log in again. So far it's holding .

Hi @cheddarhed52,

Sounds like you’ve been through quite the Windows troubleshooting marathon! 🏃‍♂️💨 I’m glad you were finally able to change the PIN and log in, but the fact that your password stopped working again is a bit concerning.

Please check a few things when you have time:

Try logging in with your Microsoft account online → If the password works there, it confirms the issue is just on your PC. If not, you might need to reset your password.

Check for Windows updates → Sometimes, login bugs can be fixed with updates.

Run ‘netplwiz’ to check user accounts → Press Win + R, type netplwiz, and see if there are any duplicate or conflicting accounts.

Create a new user account → If the issue keeps coming back, try making a new account to see if it’s profile-related.

Since your PIN is still working, that’s a good sign. Hopefully, it stays stable! Let me know if the issue pops up again—I’m happy to help troubleshoot further. 👍😊

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
