Laptop is 14 months old.  Working fine until Sunday.

- Would not start.  Per online suggestion, drained battery and was able to get started using bios function (FN B with power button). Indicated needed bios recovery.
- After recovery and getting in required bitlocker key.  After finding and entering key was able to get in.

- Later after going into sleep mode, back to not starting blink on caps key.

- On Monday was able to get in using bios function. After working for a couple of hours crashed when I did an alt/tab to switch screens. Was able to get started again using FN- B,  but message appeared about a corruption with the HP hardware driver.   Continued to the HP firmware recovery but after about  60% completion, crashed.  However, the fan continued to run.  After allowing to run for several hours tried to shut down, drain battery, etc but power button was unresponsive.  Eventually disconnected power to allow battery to drain.  Tried to restart using FN-B but can no longer get it to do anything.   Suggestions?

Hi @MikeJordi,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • The exact model number of your HP laptop.
  • Whether you see any LED blink codes or hear beeps when attempting to power on.
  • If the system shows any display or logo when pressing the power button.
  • Whether the battery and AC adapter are both original HP parts.

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Hard Reset: Disconnect the AC adapter, and hold down the power button for 15–20 seconds. Then reconnect power and try starting again.
  • BIOS Recovery via Keys: On many HP laptops, pressing Windows Key + B (or Fn + B) while holding the power button can trigger BIOS recovery. Since you mentioned this worked earlier, please try again after ensuring the battery is charged.
  • External Display Check: Connect the laptop to an external monitor to rule out display issues.
  • Remove Peripherals: Disconnect all USB devices, docking stations, or external drives before powering on.
  • AC Adapter Test: If possible, try another compatible HP adapter to ensure power delivery isn’t the issue.

I hope this helps.

I have tried all the suggestions again.  This is an Envy model? 17- cw1097nr.

Is it possible to start from an external thumb drive? What would I need to get for this?

When the power button is pushed there is a single blink on the caps lock key.
