Laptop won't turn on.  Light on power button comes on for like 5-6 seconds, caps button comes on for the last second before they both go dark.

Hi @DO97,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how stressful and helpless it feels when your laptop briefly tries to wake up, that soft glow of the power light for a few seconds, the caps lock LED flickering alive just before everything goes dark again. It’s like the laptop is trying to breathe, but can’t hold on. You’re not alone; we’ll walk through this together.

1. Perform a Full HP Power Reset

HP officially recommends a deep power reset for black‑screen + LED blinking failures.
Here’s the correct method:

  1. Turn the laptop off (press and hold the power button for 10–15 sec).
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Remove battery (if removable).
  4. Disconnect all devices: USB, HDMI, SD, everything.
  5. Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds (drains internal capacitors).
  6. Plug in the AC adapter only; leave the battery out for now.
  7. Try turning it on.

This sounds simple, but it often revives a system that fails during early power‑on.

2. Try an HP BIOS Recovery

If your BIOS is corrupted, the system may attempt to start, fail, then shut down, exactly what you’re seeing.

HP provides a built‑in BIOS recovery method:

How to attempt BIOS recovery:

  1. Turn the laptop OFF.
  2. Hold Windows + B.
  3. While holding these keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. Keep holding Windows + B for 8–10 seconds.
  5. Listen for recovery tones or watch for the BIOS recovery screen.

If the BIOS is intact, this can bring the laptop back from the dead.

3. Check for Overheating or CPU‑Related Failures

HP’s beep/blink documentation shows that caps lock indicators combined with shutdown can indicate CPU failure or motherboard fault.

This is more likely if:

  • The laptop had heating issues before.
  • The fan was loud or clogged with dust.
  • The laptop shut off randomly in the past.

If it’s a desktop, reseating the CPU is an option.
If it’s a laptop, do NOT attempt CPU reseating (BGA soldered).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
