Zbook G3
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

I am having an odd issue with my HP Zbook G3 laptop that started a couple of days ago.

When the laptop is shut down it goes through the normal cycle, the screen goes black and everything seems to be off but the  little wifi button and mute button on the keyboard remain lit.   After 30seconds or so the fans will come on a full speed and just remain on until the battery dies.  All the time all other buttons and the screen remain black.

The same thing happens if you just close the lid or try holding the power button to kill the computer - within 30s the fans just come on full speed.

As the battery is not removable I simply have to leave the machine on until the battery dies completely!!!

Otherwise everything else is working as it should be and I don't think there has been anything installed recently.

I am on the latest version of windows with no updates waiting and I have made sure the drivers as up to date as best as I can.

I assume its something to do with power management ?

Someone please help what am I missing?

I have a similar problem on my Zbook G2. My problem started 4th May after installing KB4023057. HP support are suggesting a motherboard replacement for me. But it seems odd that your problem started about the same time. Could you check Windows Update/View Update History/Quality Updates to see if you got that KB4023057 recently?

In my case the fan came on full blast as soon as screen went black after Shutdown, and started overheating. Is yours also overheating? If so you could try the Ubuntu 'fix' here  https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Fan-continues-to-run-after-shutdown-it-causes...

I suspect that something (perhaps KB4023057) has changed the configuration of the Intel Quiet System Technology. This is a firmware subsystem of Intel Management Engine. There is a programmers manual here (over 200 pages plenty of scope to make a mistake).

Until this problem is fixed I have to remove  my battery (and power cable) after 'shutdown'. This is easy on Zbook G2. There is a video for G3 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPk5BQ1ZnKg

You probably only need to do the bit at 0:28 (disconnect battery connector), not any of the further steps in the video.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I have checked and yes that particular update was installed recently.   Seems a bit to coincidental for similar machines to suffer the same issue once this update has been applied.

I have not noticed an overheating issue.

I tend to leave the laptop playing YouTube non stop (on mute) to drain battery, even so when the machine effectively dies and closes down the fans still come on for a few minutes before stopping when I assume the battery is completely drained.

I first asked Microsoft Support for help with this shutdown problem. They  suggested uninstalling KB4023057, but that option was not available. So they suggested going back to the last restore point. That did not fix the shutdown problem. Which is understandable if the problem is with a firmware change, which would not be affected by restore points. In any case the KB4023057 update came back the next day, and 3 other days, even though history says 'successfully installed' each time. So that is probably not worth trying.

Perhaps one of us should start a new thread on answers.microsoft.com

I will post a link here if I do that.

If your Zbook is still under warranty HP might be willing to replace the motherboard. That would probably fix the problem because the firmware wont be misconfigured.
