HP LAPTOP 17t-cn300
Microsoft Windows 11

When I turn the laptop on I get a message asking for an administrator's password or boot on password. I do not know them.
I tried entering a wrong password three times but instead of generating a code i get "Authentication Failed. System Locked. Press the Power button to shutdown the system".

What do I do now?

Hi @JLPAV,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Laptop 17 is asking for an administrator's password or boot password and you're unable to provide it, and you see "Authentication Failed. System Locked" after multiple incorrect attempts, you have a few options.

Use HP Password Reset Tools:

  • HP's BIOS Password Reset Tool: HP offers a BIOS Password Reset Tool that might help if you have a proof of purchase and are willing to contact HP support. You'll need to contact HP Support directly and provide your laptop's serial number and proof of ownership.
  • HP Support Website: Visit the HP Support website and look for options related to BIOS or boot passwords. They may provide guidance or require you to submit a support request.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Power Down: Shut down your laptop by pressing and holding the power button.
  • Disconnect Power: Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery if it is removable.
  • Press Power Button: Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect and Power Up: Reinsert the battery (if applicable), plug in the power adapter, and turn on the laptop.

BIOS/UEFI Password Reset:

  • If you have access to the BIOS/UEFI settings (which might require a password), you could try to reset or clear the password. This is often not possible if you are locked out but is worth a try if you have any hint of access.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
