My login user name has been changed. Upon purchasing this device, my login user name has always been my email address. However, something happened and one symbol has been removed. Thus preventing me from logging into my own chromebook. Can this be fixed?

Hi @Wynterrosefair,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP Chromebook login username has been changed.

Step-by-Step Fixes:

1. Toggle the Username Display:

A common glitch on ChromeOS causes user names to drop characters or disappear. On the login screen:

  • Toggle the option to "Show usernames on the sign-in screen" off and on.

  • Restart your Chromebook and check if your full email address reappears.

2. Type Your Password Manually:

  • If the login box is automatically trying to sign you in or auto-filling an incorrect username, delete the entry entirely.

  • Carefully type your full email address from scratch using the physical keyboard to ensure no symbols (like the @ or .) are accidentally omitted.

3. Test a Different Wi-Fi Network:

  • If your device says "Password cannot be verified," it may have lost the correct connection to your Google Account.

  • Ensure your Chromebook is connected to a strong, active Wi-Fi network.

4. Check Your Keyboard Language:

If symbols are typed incorrectly (for example, hitting @ types "), your keyboard language might have changed.

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Space to cycle through your available keyboard layouts until the correct one is active.

Advanced Troubleshooting:

If your account profile has become permanently corrupted, you will need to reset the device to remove the broken user profile.

Important: Back up any files currently stored in your local Downloads folder to Google Drive before doing this, as a reset will delete them.

  1. From the login screen, press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + R simultaneously.

  2. Click Restart.

  3. In the box that appears, select Powerwash and follow the on-screen instructions.

  4. Once reset, you will be able to log in with your correct, full Gmail or Google Account email address.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
