Laptop won't boot the hard drive, test for both Short and Long DST FAILED (SMART Check: PASSED)

Laptop: HP Notebook - 15-da0596sa

Product: 4XU39EA

Product ID

4XU39EA#ABU

FAILURE ID

M35M63-9AEBRD-XD7W3F-61D703

Country

UK

5 yr old laptop no longer booting up, stuck on hp logo screen with spinning round dots, can't get into hard drive, have some really important documents that unfortunately were not backed up.

Laptop out of warranty.

Have tried a linux live usb stick to see if can access files but 'lsblk' recognises /dev/sda but no /dev/sda1 thus can't access any files.

Thought boot sector may be corrupt and will try and install ubuntu as dual boot, however, install says 'intel RST' must be turned off.

Can intel RST be turned off in bios without losing data - as when I enabled the option to disable RST it said all data would be lost.

Looks like this laptop has 2 drives:

SATA 0.0.

HGST HTS541010B7E610 WX51A68875DN

931.5GB

PCIe 1.0,

 INTEL MEMPEK1J016GAH BTBT83010WN2016N

13.4GB

and has Intel RST turned on.

When it says hard Drive 1 has failed - which hard drive has failed the PCIe (13.4GB) one or the main SATA 1TB one?

What is the best course of action I can try to salvage any data files from the hard drive please?

Should I attempt to install the SATA drive in another laptop/PC to see if I can read the files as a secondary drive?

Any software tools (free) that would be able to recover any data?

Any useful advice would be greatly appreciated.

@robinhood11,

This is what your failure ID means:

Meaning, your hard drive has failed.  You'll need to replace it.

Hi, Thanks for the reply, I realise the hard drive has failed but you haven't really given me any advice on how I can go about recovering any data on the drive, or how this works with Intel RST.  The laptop has 2 drives a SATA one and PCIe one - which drive has failed - both or 1 - and which one?

Main thing, is it possible to retrieve any files from the drive?

@robinhood11,

These failed disk messages pertain to your primary (boot) drive, whichever drive that is.

Given what you described, in my opinion, your best option is to consult a professional data recovery service. Attempting to recover data from a physically damaged drive can worsen the damage and reduce the chances of successful recovery.
