Hi @Jeffd9

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue so clearly—seeing your laptop refuse to power on with a blinking LED is deeply frustrating, especially after trying a hard reset. The 3-blink pattern typically signals a memory (RAM) failure or detection issue on HP laptops.

Here’s a structured recovery path to help you move forward:

Step-by-Step Fix for 3-Blink Power LED (RAM Error)

1. Perform a Full Power Drain Again

Even if you've done this once, repeating it with precision can help:

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the AC adapter and try powering on.

2. Reseat or Swap RAM Modules

If you're comfortable opening the laptop:

  • Remove the back panel to access the RAM slots.
  • Carefully remove each RAM stick and clean the gold contacts with a microfiber cloth.
  • Reinsert one module at a time into the primary slot and test booting.
  • If you have two modules, test each individually to isolate the faulty one.

If you're unsure about opening the laptop, I can guide you through your specific model’s disassembly steps.

3. Check for Beep Codes or Additional LED Patterns

  • Some HP models also emit beep codes alongside LED blinks.
  • Listen carefully during startup—these can help pinpoint the fault.

4. Run HP UEFI Diagnostics (if screen briefly flashes)

  • If the screen shows any signs of life, press Esc repeatedly at startup → choose F2.
  • Run Component Tests > Memory.
