dv7-6165us
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

This a great forum  and has helped me correct my loss of SM Bus controller and USB ports due to downloading the wrong driver on HP's site for my dv7-6165us laptop.  I only have three exclamation points left to correct to have my laptop running smoothly.  Please help if you can!  I need the Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, PCI device and an unknown device.  All drivers are for my dv7-6165us laptop.  Could you provide the correct driver links so i don't guess and make the horrible mistake again.  I did get back from this forum one of my left side USB ports and both right side USB ports after clicking on links suffered by another user.  Thank You so much!!!  Win 7 64x chipset.

Hi:

See if these drivers work...

Graphics:

This package provides the AMD High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver and Catalyst Control Center for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. For notebooks with switchable graphics modes, this package includes drivers for both graphics processing units (GPUs). Switchable graphics enable users to switch between a power-saving graphics mode (normally used under battery power) and a high-performance graphics mode. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver.

File name: sp52989.exe

PCI Dev:

This package contains the driver that enables the Realtek Card Reader in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The card reader enables users to read from or write to supported removable storage cards, which are typically used in digital cameras, digital music players, and cellular phones.

File name: sp52669.exe

Unk Dev:

This will install HP 3D DriveGuard, which provides protection for a notebook computer's internal disk drive if the computer is accidentally dropped or abruptly hits another object. This package is available on supported notebooks with supported operating systems.

File name: sp53462.exe

Paul,

YOU are amazing!  Thank You so much for suggesting the driver files to fix my VGA Graphics Adapter and PCI device! They both worked like a charm. 🙂  The Unknown device still shows on my device manager but two out of three ain't bad as they say.  Don't know if you have anymore suggestions but i want to pick your brain just a little further if i may? The unkown device has these hardware values:  USB\VID_138A&PID_0018&REV_0078

                                                                    USB\VID_138A&PID_0018

Also, as you may know since you have incredible extensive knowledge with HP both my Pavilion dv6 and the Pavilion dv7 (the one you are currently saving, that i just bought) has serious overheating problems.  I have read that upgrading the BIOS to the current settings fixes the heat problem.  Do you believe this and if so what driver file could you give me to upgrade the BIOS.  Do you know of another saving ritual to save the over heating problems technically?

You are amazing, thank You for your time Paul!,

drew

You're very welcome, Drew.

You need this driver for the fingerprint reader (which is what that ID is to).

This package contains the driver that enables the Validity Fingerprint Sensor in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The fingerprint sensor scans fingerprints for use with biometric security applications.

File name: sp56403.exe

Regarding the overheating issue...

Below is the latest BIOS update for your notebook.

Could it be possible that the update fixes the issue?   Possibly, if there is something wrong in the system that does not trigger the fan to come on when it should or not allow it to spin up faster as the heat builds, and the BIOS update fixes that.

But since I have not studied the issue as you have, I can't say if it will solve the problem or not.

The BIOS release notes don't address it, as you can see below.

Released: Sep 27, 2011

Version F.21  - Fixes an intermittent issue which caused a "blue screen" error to occur.

This package provides an update to the System BIOS. The update installs on supported notebook models using a supported Microsoft Windows Operating System. A reboot is required to complete the installation.

File name: sp54724.exe

Are the fan intake and exhaust vents clear of lint and dust?  That is normally the most common cause of overheating.

Not to mention that notebooks with AMD hardware generally run considerably warmer than ones with Intel hardware with only the Intel onboard graphics.

Please let us know if the BIOS update resolves the thermal problem.

Thank you once again for your help Paul and the quick response!  I will let you know the results.  I do agree that AMD's habitually run hotter than Intel chips but unfortunately the dv6 has an i7 chip and the dv7 has the A8 AMD so not sure if the processors are the cause as opposed to a design flaw possibly with the fan being obstructed as i have read on my blogs on this forum.  In order to resolve the heat issue temporarily i propped up the back center of my dv7 about two inches on business cards while having a table fan angled downward to blow into the back of the laptop while performing these and windows updates downloads to prevent a thermal meltdown which forces the shut down.  I would rather try the technical driver upgrades before resulting to opening up and modifying the fan 😉

Best as always,

Hi Paul,

Ok as usual you were spot on with the driver file for the fingerprint reader.  I now am completely free and clear of ANY Yellow question marks or exclamation points in my device manager!  I realize i asked for the file to upgrade or flash the BIOS to the current settings to possible prevent the heat management problem but the warning menu asking me if i'm SURE i want to flash the BIOS has spooked me as it seems like a major catastrophic event to my pc.  My system is free of device manager problems for the first time due to your expertise.   When i bought it recently on Craigslist i was thinking i had a lemon since there were no less than NINE exclamation points in the device manager area of the control panel.  You solved them all and deserve MAJOR KUDOS!!!!  I will try using my laptop in its current state and if the overheating occurs try to flash the BIOS.  What will flashing the BIOS do negatively possibly? I certainly dont want to have to start over fixing everything again haha.

Anytime, Drew.

Glad to be of assistance.

All I can tell you is that is the BIOS file on the dv7-6165us support page which you can see below to make sure I gave you the correct file.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Pavilion-dv7-6100-Entertainment-Notebook-PC-serie...

That warning is the normal blurb that presents itself when you flash a BIOS.

Is it risky to flash the BIOS?  Yes.  Can it damage your PC permanently, rendering it useless?  Yes.

It is not something I recommend you do when nothing is wrong but if there are knowledgable folks out there that say the latest BIOS update will resolve the O/H problem, then it may be worth the risk.

Since you have to flash the BIOS when running windows, you should make sure that you have no programs open when you run the BIOS update.  You may even want to exit the antivirus program if you have one installed.

Some robust A/V programs will actually try and interrupt the BIOS update from installing, thinking it is a virus.

If that happens, the PC is toast.

Another thing you can do is to flash the BIOS in windows safe mode where hardly any processes are running.

It's your call.

WOW Paul,

Glad you told me that tidbit of info, i will think long and hard but as you say you have given me the correct BIOS file to flash so there shouldnt be any downside.  Now after defragging the hard drive my laptop says the cooling fan is not working correctly and it would have shut down unless i hit the continue button.  I have core temp loaded so i will make sure the temps dont exceed danger levels.

Hi, Drew:

That is odd you would get that warning simply because of defragging the HDD.

Is the fan running at all?  If it is, perhaps they are right about the BIOS update taking care of the issue.

HP used to have all of the BIOS' revision history on each support page.

It may have been a previous release that fixed the fan issue.

Since BIOS updates are cumulative, if a previous release did fix the fan problem, then the version on the support page would also include the fix.

The problem is we don't know if the current BIOS version on your PC was before such a fix was released, or after.

In any event, good luck with your notebook.

Best Regards,

Paul
