I upgraded my HP laptop 17-by4xxx 11 Gen intel to 64 GB (2) x 32 GB 3200 speed. However, it will only accept one of the 32 GB sticks. It came with 8 GB. What's up?  I read somewhere that some computers actually run better at the lower 2666 speed? Do I need 2 each 32 gb @ 2666?

i5 @ 2.4 GHz

family: HP Notebook

system board:881B

Windows 10

thanks-mike

Hi, Mike:

I see that the Crucial memory report indicates the max memory is 2 x 32 GB.

I recommend you confirm that by running this command:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

I'm thinking if the notebook will only allow 1 x 32 GB to run, that it only supports 2 x 16 GB of memory.

The speed shouldn't matter.

If your notebook's processor cannot run the memory any faster than 2666 MHz, then a 3200 MHz chip automatically bridges to 2666 MHz.

The DDR4-3200 should not be the cause of your dilemma.

HP only has the service manual for the older 17-by1xxx model series on your notebook's support page and according to chapter 1 of that manual the max memory was 2 x 8 GB for that model series.

Thanks Paul for the quick response. After running that command it only shows 32 GB. Just saved me $100!
