I did not know about the windows reset in windows 10.

 

It took 2 hours but all the hardware works now.    I marked your post as the solution.

Touchpad and USB mouse both move the pointer.

 

However, the reset is far from perfect.   it removes many applications that are not saved in the list on the desktop.  it will take me quite a while to figure out all the things that are missing.

 

I had to reinstall Office from the CD.

 

The only big problem left is email.   My wife has used Windows Live Mail for 5 years on that laptop.

Windows 10 removed it and there is no way I have found to download it.

I will research on other threads to see if I can find a procedure to install WLM or import all her email into another mail tool.
