My HP ENVY crashed, and was not recoverable. I am now using a DELL VISTA laptop. Prior to crash I backed up files on a SEAGATE external drive. The files have an swm extension.
Since I no longer have ther HP ENVY, what tools, files, procedures, etc., do I need to recover these files to the DELL laptop?

You should have one file in the backup with an .exe extension- possibly RecoveryMgr.exe or similiar. Try double clicking it to run and see if it will extract the backup files to a folder on the Dell laptop. Don't stop it if seems to not be doing anything for a few minutes, just wait until it either starts extracting or gives an error.
If no joy with that you may be able to extract the .swm files using an unzip utility like Winzip, 7Zip,etc starting with the lowest numbered file.
If you plan to reinstall Windows or replace the hard drive if needed in the Envy perhaps you can get the files extracted to it later. Which Envy model do you have and what OS were you running?
