Why did my HP Envy laptop update its BIOS without warning? This is scary. It felt like I was being hacked. How do I control this process and ensure that this was a legitimate action by HP, in the future?

Hi @VGilmore

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I completely understand how unsettling it must have felt to see your BIOS update without any prior notice—it’s not something you expect, and it can feel intrusive.

You’re absolutely right to want clarity and control over this process.

Why It Happened

Your HP Envy laptop may have received a BIOS update automatically through Windows Update or via HP Support Assistant, which can silently install firmware updates to improve system stability, security, or compatibility.

These updates are typically legitimate and digitally signed by HP, but the lack of notification can understandably raise concerns.

How to Take Control of BIOS Updates

1. Disable Automatic Firmware Updates via Windows Update

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  • Turn off “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”
  • You can also use the Pause updates option to temporarily stop all updates.

2. Use Group Policy Editor (Windows 11 Pro)

  • Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  • Navigate to:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update
  • Double-click “Do not include drivers with Windows Update” and set it to Enabled.

3. Check HP Support Assistant Settings

  • Open HP Support Assistant.
  • Go to Settings > Change how my device is updated.
  • Disable automatic updates or uncheck BIOS updates if available.

4. Verify BIOS Update Legitimacy

  • Visit the official HP support page for your model:
HP Envy Laptop Drivers and BIOS Updates
  • Match the BIOS version installed on your system with the latest listed on HP’s site.
  • To check your current BIOS version, press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and look under BIOS Version/Date.

You’re absolutely right to want transparency and control. If you’d like help reviewing your current BIOS version or configuring update settings, I’m here to guide you through it.
