Pavilion x360 M1
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My Pavilion X360 M1 got messed up big time - all accounts were set to "disabled."  I tried everything I could think of including Ophcrack and Trinity Rescue Disk - no joy.

So I executed a recovery - to my astonishment it "recovered" to Win8 rather than the Win10 that came on it when I bought it.

How do I get Win10 back without buying a copy?

Thanks

@Jstevans,

the contact number for the US Tech Support is 1-800-474-6836

The recovery media that you will get for this unit will be a USB version.

If it was ever activated with Windows 10 all you need to do is go to the Microsoft Media Creation Tool site and download the installer tool and run it. Windows 10 activation servers keep a record of your computer and WIndows 10 will just activate the first time connected to the internet.

Hi @Jstevans,

As per the product specs of your unit, I see that it came with Win 10

So if you ran recovery you should be able to get it back to Win 10. I would recommend you to get the recovery media for your unit. You can call HP Tech support for that at your country.

That would be best if you can wait for HP to ship you a disk..if you simply do the in-place upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool you will keep all the HP apps and such and wind up in the same place in about an hour as if you wait a week for the HP disk. The bigger issue is how you wound up with Windows 8. Does not seem possible if the laptop was loaded with Windows 10 from the factory.

It turns out this model was shipped with Win8 in the backup partition of the hard drive.  I don't know why but HP has offered a recovery disk and I'll accept their kind offer.

Thanks for the response.

Great to hear from an HP employee.  Thank you for responding so quickly.

Your suggestion sounds great - except for two things.

First, I just spent a few minutes trying to find the HP Support phone number for the US - they really do not want phone calls, huh?  Could you please provide a number or a link where I can find same.

Second, that laptop shipped with no CD drive.  Can they provide the Win10 recovery tools on a USB drive?

Thanks

Jay
