Hi @Janet156,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A stuck Caps Lock button with its light permanently on can be caused by a physical or software issue. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve it.
Check for Physical Issues
Inspect the Key:
- Check if the Caps Lock key is physically stuck. Use gentle pressure to wiggle it and ensure nothing is lodged underneath.
- Clean around the key using a soft brush or compressed air.
Press Firmly:
- Firmly press and release the key multiple times to ensure it's not jammed.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Power Down:
- Shut down the laptop completely.
- Disconnect all external devices.
- Drain Power:
- Unplug the charger and, if possible, remove the battery (if it is removable).
- Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
- Restart the Laptop:
- Reconnect the battery and power it on to see if the issue persists.
Check for Software or Driver Issues
Reboot in Safe Mode:
- Boot your laptop into Safe Mode to see if the issue is caused by a software conflict.
- If the key works in Safe Mode, uninstall any recent updates or software that might interfere with keyboard functionality.
Update Keyboard Drivers:
- Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard driver, and choose Update driver.
- Restart the system after updating.
Reset Keyboard Settings:
- Open Control Panel > Ease of Access > Make the keyboard easier to use.
- Ensure options like Sticky Keys are turned off.

Test with an External Keyboard
- Connect an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard:
- If the external keyboard works fine, the issue may be with the built-in keyboard and might require repair.
Perform a System Reset (Optional)
If software troubleshooting doesn’t resolve the issue:
- Perform a System Restore to revert your laptop to a point before the problem began.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Your response was clear as mud. However, I took my laptop to a mobile shop and because the on button was broken I had to get a new keyboard. Now I have two more problems. The first is that signing in is extremely slow; the other issue is that I can't type anything, either to respond to emails or use one of the search engines. I can only type about four letters and then it gives up, despite the cursor working. (I am typing this in the local library). My laptop is only about two years old. I did return to the shop and the assistant fiddles around a bit and got it working; not for long though.
