Hi @Sillygoose9766,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how scary and hopeless a BitLocker black screen feels. When the laptop refuses to boot, shows only a black screen with BitLocker repair, and the recovery key you have is not accepted, it feels like the whole PC is locked away from you. But you still have a path forward, and I’ll guide you carefully.

Let’s fix this step‑by‑step.

STEP 1: The REAL BitLocker Key Location

Your BitLocker key is stored in only 3 possible places:
1. Microsoft Account (MOST COMMON)

Go to this link on any phone/computer:

🔗 Find your BitLocker recovery key - Microsoft Support

Sign in with every Microsoft account you’ve EVER used on that laptop.

Look for:

  • Work email
  • Personal email
  • Old Hotmail/Outlook
  • School account

You’ll see a list of devices + recovery keys.

2. Printed or Saved Copy

Check: Pictures folder, Downloads, Documents, USB drives, Paper files, Old notebooks

It’s usually labelled like:
BitLocker Recovery Key.txt

3. Work/School IT Admin (if managed device)

If this is a company/school laptop, the IT department holds the key.

If the key you entered says “incorrect”

This means:

  • It is not for this device
  • It was from another PC
  • It was from an old Windows installation

Every Windows installation has its own unique key.
No two laptops share a key.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
