Unknown hp lap top 5 years old 17" screen

I do not have the model number because the owner cannot read the the extremely fine print on the back of the lap top.  It is however an HP 17" (diagonal measurement) screen laptop purchased approximately 5 years ago.

He has forgotten the initial login code used on start up.

He is also in FL and I am in GA, so my only link is the landline.

The computer was not charged for several months, however it has responded with the correct light codes when the charger was plugged in.

I assume once fully charged the lock screen page will have the "I forgot my password option".

His only option to receive a response code will be his "Jitter Bug" type phone (whatever that is ?).

I have the follow up instructions from the HP web site to restart the laptop.

Anything else I should know?

BTW HP should be ashamed for treating its loyal customers so poorly.

@John182RG, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query.

Once the laptop is fully charged, the "I forgot my password" option should appear on the lock screen. If the laptop is connected to a Microsoft account, your contact can reset the password through a recovery code sent to their email or phone number.

The HP support instructions you have should be helpful.

Let me know how it goes.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
