@Happy-12, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing a serious issue with your HP laptop after plugging in an external hard drive. The symptoms you're describing, such as the F11 key light blinking and the laptop shutting off completely, suggest that there may have been a short or interruption in the power system. Let's go through a step-by-step troubleshooting process to address this.

Disconnect Everything

  • Unplug the laptop from the charger.
  • Remove any external devices, including the hard drive and any USB devices.
  • If your laptop has a removable battery, take it out as well.

Perform a Hard Reset

This step clears any "stuck" power that may be preventing the laptop from starting:

  • Press and hold the Power button for at least 30 seconds.
  • Release the button.
  • Now connect only the charger (leave the battery out if it’s removable) and try turning it on.

Check the Charger and Power Port

  • Ensure that the charger is functioning properly. If you have another compatible HP charger, try using that.
  • Check if the charger LED lights up when plugged in.
  • Inspect the laptop’s power port for any signs of damage, such as bending or looseness.

Try a BIOS Recovery Key Combo

If the hardware is okay but the BIOS is corrupted, this might help:

  • Plug in the charger.
  • Press and hold the Windows key + B (or Windows key + V) + Power button together for about 15 seconds.
  • Watch for any signs of life, such as the screen blinking, the fan spinning up, or the BIOS Recovery screen appearing.

If Nothing Works: Possible Scenarios

If the laptop still does not respond:

  • The motherboard protection may have activated due to a short circuit (especially if the hard drive drew too much power).
  • There could be BIOS corruption from the sudden shutdown.
  • Power circuitry damage may have occurred.

In these cases, please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
