HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop PC 14-ea0000 (1Q879AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

When I go home from the office I unplug the laptop and press the power button (I have the setting on "When I press the power button - hibernate") the screen turns black and the fans stop working. I expect it to enter hibernation. However, when I get home and open the laptop - it's hot and I see a blue screen saying that it was shut down due to overheating. It means that it kept working in my backpack.

This is very frustrating and it is not how I expect HP laptop to work.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi @vvnechy ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your laptop doesn’t properly enter hibernation, causing it to overheat while enclosed. To fix this, follow these steps:

1. Verify Hibernate Settings

  1. Press Windows + S, type Power Options, and press Enter.
  2. Click Choose what the power buttons do from the left panel.
  3. Ensure that Hibernate is selected for "When I press the power button."
  4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable and ensure Hibernate is checked under "Shutdown settings."

2. Update Power Management Drivers

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand System Devices and locate Intel Management Engine Interface.
  3. Right-click it and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers.

3. Update BIOS

An outdated BIOS can cause hibernation issues.

  1. Visit the HP Drivers & Software website.
  2. Enter your laptop's model (Spectre x360 Convertible 14-ea0000) and check for BIOS updates.
  3. Download and install the latest BIOS update.

4. Disable Wake Timers

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Select Change plan settings for your current power plan.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand Sleep > Allow wake timers.
    • Set it to Disable for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."
  5. Click OK.

5. Check Fast Startup

Fast Startup can interfere with hibernation.

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  2. Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended) and click Save changes.

6. Run a Power Troubleshooter

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Run the Power troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.

7. Check for Background Processes

Background processes may prevent proper hibernation.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.
  2. Check for resource-heavy processes before pressing the power button.
  3. End unnecessary tasks and try hibernating again.

8. Perform a Clean Boot

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Go to the Services tab and check Hide all Microsoft services.
  3. Click Disable all and apply the changes.
  4. Restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.
