I got a laptop for Xmas and I have tried so many times to st it up but no matter what I try it will not let me sign in. At times it's like I have signed in successfully and then I'm just take right back to sig in again. I'm not computer literate at all and I find it all very frustrating.

Hi @Emmetd85

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I can definitely understand how frustrating it must be, especially when you're excited to use a new laptop, but it just won't let you log in. No worries—I’ll guide you step-by-step through some things to try and hopefully get you logged in successfully.

Here are a few common reasons this might happen, along with solutions:

1. Check Your Password

  • Caps Lock or Num Lock: Ensure that Caps Lock is off and Num Lock is on (if you’re typing numbers). These can sometimes cause incorrect login attempts without you realizing it.
  • Verify the correct password: Double-check if the password you're entering is correct. If you're unsure, try typing it on a separate device to verify it.

2. Try Signing In With a Different Account (if you have one)

  • Sometimes, laptops have multiple user accounts. If you have another account set up, try logging in with that.
  • Switch User Account: On the sign-in screen, look for a "Other User" option or "Switch User" to see if you can log in with a different account.

3. Perform a Hard Reset (Restart the Laptop)

  • Power off the laptop completely by holding down the power button for 10-15 seconds.
  • Once it turns off, wait a moment and then power it back on and try logging in again.

4. Check Internet Connection (if it's an online account)

  • If your laptop is trying to log you into an online account (e.g., Microsoft account), make sure you are connected to the internet. Without a working internet connection, you may be unable to sign in to an online account.
    • Connect to Wi-Fi: On the sign-in screen, check for a Wi-Fi icon (in the bottom right) and make sure you are connected to the internet.

5. Try Using the On-Screen Keyboard

  • If you're unable to type your password due to a keyboard issue, you can use the on-screen keyboard to enter your password.
    • On Windows: At the login screen, click the Ease of Access icon in the bottom-right corner (a little clock with a hand), and select On-Screen Keyboard.

6. Check for Windows Updates

  • If you're able to get to the login screen but the system keeps looping, it might be due to an incomplete update.
    • Try restarting your laptop and let any updates install. If you can get into the system in Safe Mode, you can try updating from there.

7. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that can help fix problems like this. To boot into Safe Mode:
    1. Force a restart three times in a row (turn off and on the laptop, three times during the boot process).
    2. The fourth time, your laptop will boot into the Advanced Startup Options screen.
    3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and then click Restart.
    4. Once your laptop restarts, you’ll have the option to boot into Safe Mode.
    5. From Safe Mode, try logging in and updating any drivers or fixing issues that might be causing the login problem.

8. Reset the Password (if you have a Microsoft Account)

  • If you're using a Microsoft account (like a Hotmail or Outlook email), you can reset your password:
    1. On the sign-in screen, click on the "I forgot my password" or "Reset Password" link (usually under the password box).
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password via email

I hope this helps.
