Hi @Vampirekitty,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand why you're worried, especially if this is your first laptop. Since the charging light is blinking orange and white and the laptop repeatedly starts and shuts down, let's avoid opening the bottom for now.

Please try these steps:
1. Try a different wall outlet
Disconnect the AC adapter from the wall and plug it into a different known-working wall outlet. Make sure the adapter is firmly connected to the laptop and the outlet.

Also disconnect any USB devices, memory cards, external drives, or other accessories from the laptop.

2. Perform a hard reset
A hard reset does not erase your personal files.

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  2. Disconnect all nonessential external devices.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for approximately 25 seconds
  4. Reconnect the original HP AC adapter.
  5. Try turning the laptop on again.

3. Try HP BIOS Recovery
If the laptop still repeatedly shuts down, try the built-in HP BIOS recovery:

  1. Make sure the laptop is turned off
  2. Connect the AC adapter and leave it connected.
  3. Press and hold Windows + B
  4. While continuing to hold Windows + B, press the Power button for about 2–3 seconds
  5. Release the Power button, but continue holding Windows + B
  6. You may hear beeps, and an HP BIOS Update/Recovery screen may appear.
  7. If the BIOS recovery screen appears, allow the process to complete. Do not turn the laptop off during the recovery.

If Windows + B does not bring up the BIOS recovery screen, HP notes that some models use Windows + V instead. You can try the same procedure with Windows + V

If the laptop continues to power on and shut down and you cannot get the BIOS recovery screen to appear, please don't open the bottom cover yet.

Could you tell me the exact ProBook 440 model/generation (for example, 440 G5, G6, G7, etc.) and whether the laptop shows any HP logo or display at all before shutting down? With that information, we can check the correct procedure for your specific ProBook.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
