HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000 (794H8AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I bought a laptop a few months ago.  Within a few weeks, it was restarting ALL THE TIME.  I bought a new laptop and it does the same thing, and has been doing it from the day I bought it.  NONE of the recommended "fixes" have fixed anything.  No malware, no overheating, just really bad computers from what I can tell.  Is there something that can ACTUALLY be done to fix this?  At this point, I will never buy an HP again.  Other than this, they are pretty good laptops, but it is SO frustrating. Any thoughts on additional fixes?

Hi @CSKenji

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

My sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused to you. We'd hate for you to be stuck in a situation like this. Because you matter to us.

If your HP laptop is constantly restarting and none of the typical fixes have worked, here are some steps that may help identify and resolve the issue:

1. Update Realtek Wi-Fi Driver

  • Go to HP’s official driver page for your model.
  • Download the latest Realtek RTL8851BE driver (look for version 6101.19.131.0 or newer).
  • Install manually via Device Manager:
    • Windows + X > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Right-click Realtek > Update Driver > Browse manually.

2. Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  • Save and reboot.

3. BIOS Update

  • On the same HP driver page, download the latest BIOS update.
  • Follow HP’s instructions carefully—this can resolve firmware-level reboot triggers.

4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart and press Esc, then F2 to enter diagnostics.
  • Run System Tests > Extensive Test to check for hidden hardware faults.

5. Clean Boot Test

  • Type msconfig in the Start menu.
  • Under Services, check “Hide all Microsoft services” then click Disable all.
  • Under Startup, open Task Manager and disable all startup items.
  • Reboot and observe stability.

6. Disable Automatic Restart:

  • Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings and uncheck Automatic Restart. This will prevent the laptop from restarting and may display error messages that can help diagnose the issue.

7. Power Management Settings:

  • Check your power settings for any misconfigurations that could cause the laptop to restart. Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep, and ensure that the settings are appropriate for your usage.

8. Scan for Corrupted System Files:

  • Run System File Checker by opening the Command Prompt as an administrator and typing sfc /scannow.

9. Battery and Power Adapter Check:

  • Ensure the battery and power adapter are working properly. A faulty battery or adapter might cause unexpected restart behavior.

🧨 If All Else Fails

If the issue persists even after these steps:

  • Consider requesting a replacement motherboard or firmware patch through HP support.
  • Document the issue thoroughly and escalate via HP Support Community or direct contact.
  • If under warranty, push for a refund or exchange—especially since it’s a recurring issue across units.
