Pavilion dv6. The windows recovery discs work with the original hard drive. The hard drive test say the hard drive is going bad. An exact hard drive was replaced. The windows recovery disc boots up and then says, the instruction at 0x8000cf80 referenced memory at 0x0012abb0. The memory can not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program.

Hi @TheGuy78

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The error you're encountering, "The instruction at 0x8000cf80 referenced memory at 0x0012abb0," typically points to a memory-related issue or a conflict during the recovery process.

Since you've replaced the hard drive and are using recovery discs, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Verify Recovery Disc Integrity

  1. Check the recovery discs for scratches, dirt, or damage. Clean them gently with a soft cloth if needed.
  2. If possible, create a new set of recovery discs or use a USB recovery drive.

Step 2: Test System Memory (RAM)

  1. Faulty RAM can cause memory errors during recovery. Run a memory diagnostic test:
    • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly during startup.
    • Select System Diagnostics and run the Memory Test.
  2. If errors are detected, replace the faulty RAM module.

Step 3: Check BIOS Settings

  1. Ensure the BIOS is configured correctly:
    • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter the BIOS setup.
    • Verify that the new hard drive is detected under Storage or Boot Options.
    • Set the boot order to prioritize the recovery disc or USB drive.
  2. Save changes and exit BIOS.

Step 4: Use a Clean Installation of Windows

  1. If the recovery discs continue to fail, consider performing a clean installation of Windows:
    • Download the Windows ISO file from Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.
    • Create a bootable USB drive and install Windows on the new hard drive.
  2. Use the product key from your laptop (usually on a sticker) to activate Windows.

Step 5: Replace the Hard Drive (if necessary)

  1. If the new hard drive is not functioning as expected, test it using HP Diagnostics:
    • Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly during startup.
    • Select System Diagnostics and run the Hard Drive Test.
  2. If the test fails, replace the hard drive with a compatible one.
